This year my fiance and I took a trip to Tybee Island, Georgia for spring break. This wasn’t the most normal trip however, because the Coronavirus caused some shops to close, us to take extra precautions, and eventually caused us to come home four days early. Normally you couldn’t catch me sitting down unless it was on a beach, but obviously this situation changed a few things. With that said, here is where we ate at and adventured to.

Eateries

CoCo’s Sunset Grille

This is an great place if you want a view of the water and some seafood to pair with it. The restaurant also has good adult beverages if that’s your thing. I had a white sangria and then a sip of my fiance’s Funky Monkey drink that tasted somewhat like a pina coloda.

North Beach Bar and Grill

Located just steps away from the beach and the lighthouse, there is plenty to do before or after eating. We went here for lunch and I have to say the sauteed shrimp was quite frankly the best I have ever had. I believe the shrimp is boiled, coated in a little Cajun spice, and then smothered in this mouthwatering lemon, garlic, butter, and spice sauce. If I could figure out how to replicate this sauce, I would more than likely put it on everything. They also serve some classic southern side such as red beans and rice, coleslaw, and pasta salad.

Tybean Art & Coffee Bar

A quaint, cute, and funky little coffee bar nestled in this small shopping center of little hut-like shops. The coffee shops serves a wide assortment of drinks and even hot chocolate or apple cider if tea or coffee isn’t your jam. They also have a small selection of delicious pastries. I highly suggest trying the apple fritter.

LoCo To Go from The Original Crab Shack

This was one of the most high recommended restaurants on Tybee Island. If I’m being honest though, it wasn’t as stellar as mentioned. The food was good, but not exemplary. I will state that I ordered the low country boil which is a shrimp dish and this is a crab shack. To each their own, but I would assume a crab shack could serve up excellent shrimp as well. The atmosphere certainly makes up for any lack of flavor in the food.

There is an alligator pond where you can feed them if you’d like. The alligators were born from parents that were in a rehabilitation clinic and thus were raised in captivity and cannot be returned to the wild. They also have a room near the gift shop filled with a variety of rescued birds. The restaurant also sits right in the water and has a gorgeous view.

Huc-A-Poos Bites and Booze

If you are looking for a good pizza this place has you covered. We order this delicious white pizza topped with spinach, onions, and chicken. The atmosphere here is also quite interesting as they have vintage signs scattered throughout in addition to the hundreds, possibly thousands, of dollars stapled to the walls all with something unique written on them. My favorite was rather sassy and “thanked” a member of their spring break crew for ruining spring break.

The Breakfast Club

The Breakfast Club was one of my favorite places I have even eaten for breakfast. We discovered this place the morning as we were about to hit the road and decided to have one last celebratory meal and that we did! My fiance ordered the Blackhawk Burrito and I ordered the Fire Roasted Red Pepper which was along the lines of a breakfast scramble. These entrees were absolutely to die for, so much so that I ate my whole meal and then some of my fiance’s as well because they were just so good. If you are on Tybee island for even a day, I highly suggest considering making a visit especially if you are a breakfast person.

Adventuring

North Beach

This beach would be amazing for laying out on a warm and sunny day. It isn’t super crowded and there are swings all along the beach. If you would like to enjoy a drink on the beach, the North Beach Bar and Grill is a short walk away and they serve adult beverages in to-go cups. There is also a lovely view of the lighthouse from the beach.

Hut-Like Shops between Solomon Ave and Highway 80

There are several awesome shops in this little center. Local photographer Casey Jones displays his shots from around Tybee Island and Savannah at the Tybee Gallery.

There is a Hot Sauce Emporium called Inferno LLC. They have free tasting of nearly all of the items they carry and the employees are more than happy to talk about the products and their history/creation. I love a good kick as much as the next person, but if you aren’t one for heat they also have delightful salsas, garlic sauces, and other non-spicy products.

If you love painting pottery or are just trying to pass time on a gloomy or rainy day, there is also a paint your own pottery studio called Glazed and Confused. Pro tip: if this is something you are interested in doing make sure you have at least three days for turn around. It will take time after you’ve painted for the owner to complete the process of glazing and firing your piece.

15th Street Beach Access

While I was not on Tybee long enough to know if there are swings at every beach access point, I know that there are swings here and at the North Beach near the lighthouse. You can also find a great view of the pier from the 15th street access point.

Take a Drive Around The Island

The island is rather stunning especially along the beach and the inner waterways filled with perpetually long docks. I also quite enjoy taking in the architecture so taking a drive is great way to do that. There also isn’t a better way to find little shops and restaurants you wouldn’t have heard of otherwise. Driving around is actually how we found the little hut-like shops.

That’s if for this post. I know this post will be going up in the midst of the the Coronavirus. I just want to make a disclaimer that when we went on this trip there had been no mention of social distancing or even cases within hours of the island. We did take precautions given that my fiance’s mother is a nurse anesthetist and had been aware of the impact this disease could have.

I decided to go forward with this post as something entertaining for people to read. For those from this area, I would suggest looking up these restaurants to see if they are offering takeout or to go to help support them in this time. This applies to any restaurants near you as the restaurant industry like many industries are suffering.
