How to Move Past a Rough Semester

The end of the semester is nearing or for some such as myself, has already passed. This semester took quite a toll on me because I took too many classes but also happened to take some of my hardest classes at the same time. I continue to question if I could,  would I go back and changed my schedule at the beginning of the semester and the answer is maybe.  If I changed my schedule, I wouldn’t have learned the lessons I did from this semester.  After a rough semester, I think we could all learn how to move past it. This post doesn’t just have to be about college either. We all go through hard seasons in life and we have to persevere to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

This semester taught me many lessons but the one I believe to be the most important is to have trust in yourself! If you don’t believe in yourself then no one will and you are just screwing yourself over quite frankly. Having ended the semester better than it seemed like I was going to, I learned that we must always trust and believe in ourselves regardless of your situation. This is something I will continue to take into further semesters and the rest of my life. So the first step in moving past a rough semester is the trust yourself because you will eventually get yourself out of that difficult situation or semester and you will have learned a lot from it.

The second step is to declutter and get reorganized. I don’t know about you all but when life gets messy, so does my place! For the most part, I am a rather organized and clean person, but this semester my place turned into a wreck, it might as well have been just a well-decorated dumpster. I had dished pilled up in my sink, dog toy stuffing and hairballs floating around like a desert, clothes piled so high they could make a mountain, and enough study material and notes spread across my placed to look like a plaque of schoolwork attacked my place. As soon as my semester ended, the first thing I did was clean my life away and get rid of everything I no longer needed. In the mindset of cleaning and organizing, I also tackled my closet and am selling or donating clothes I no longer wear or like. Cleaning and decluttering relieve a weight you didn’t enough know you were carrying until it is taken away. I never knew how much effect my living situation was having on my stress level and mental health in general until I finally had the time to clean.

Another tip I have is to take some time for yourself! This as always is better said than done but I promise you it is well worth it. One of my favorite pastimes is to read especially when it comes to blogs. Once the first month passed my life became crazy and to get everything done I needed to in a day I had to put reading on the backburner. Reading makes me happy and so I want you all to do something that makes you happy that you haven’t allowed yourself to do in a while. This could even be as simple as taking a long bath with the bath bomb that has been sitting in your cabinet waiting to be used for weeks.

Spend time with friends and family! As college students we are away from our families for the majority of the years and depending on how your life is going you might not have been able to spend time with your friends much either. With this newfound time, I believe it is very important to spend time with people you haven’t been able to and to catch up on what has happened in each of your lives and show that you still care about that person.

“Life has a way of testing a persons will, either by having nothing happen at all or by having everything happen at once.”

~Paolo Coelho

The last way I have learned to move on is to trust in the bigger picture meaning God or whatever it is you choose to believe in. Sometimes life is difficult and you just have to trust that you experienced it for a reason. I would love to sit here and tell you that life is always going to be easy and work out the way you wanted to but then I’d just be a liar.

Everything works out in the long run …

so true!! i so admire your advice that when things may not have gone as planned, we can take steps to acknowledge it, recover, and get back on track for what comes next!
